Whether you're a new customer or upgrading your Sky service, this guide walks you through how to book your Sky TV installation, what to expect on the day, and how to prepare your home. It’s written with UK Sky customers in mind, using plain English and practical tips.
What is Sky TV Installation?
Sky TV installation is the process of setting up your Sky equipment so you can start watching your chosen channels. Depending on the type of Sky service you’ve ordered—like Sky Q, Sky Glass, or Sky Stream—installation may involve a home visit from an engineer or a simple plug-and-play setup.
Step 1: Choose Your Sky TV Package
Before you can book an installation, you need to pick the right Sky TV package for your needs. Sky offers:
Sky Q – Satellite-based TV with a set-top box and dish.Sky Glass – A smart TV with Sky built in, no dish required.Sky Stream – A small streaming puck that works over broadband, no dish needed. You can add extras like Sky Sports, Sky Cinema, Netflix, or UHD content. Visit Sky.com to compare packages and prices.
Step 2: Place Your Order
Once you’ve chosen your package, place your order online or by phone. During checkout, Sky will:
Ask for your address and contact details.Check your property type (house, flat, etc.).Offer available installation dates and times.Confirm whether an engineer is needed. If you're ordering Sky Q, you’ll usually need an engineer to install a satellite dish and set-top box. For Sky Glass or Sky Stream, you may be able to self-install.
Step 3: Book Your Installation Appointment
If your service requires an engineer, you’ll be prompted to book a time slot. Sky offers:
AM slots (usually 8am–1pm)PM slots (usually 1pm–6pm)You’ll receive confirmation by email or text. You can also track or change your appointment via the Track My Order page.
⚠️ Important: Someone over 18 must be home for the full time slot. If you miss the appointment or cancel too late, you may be charged a £25 fee.
Step 4: Prepare for the Engineer Visit
To make installation smooth, here’s how to get ready:
If you live in a house:
Clear space near your TV and power sockets.Make sure the engineer can access the outside wall for the dish.Keep pets in another room for safety. If you live in a flat or apartment:
Check if your building has a communal satellite dish.If yes, the engineer will need access to it—ask your landlord or building manager where it is.If no communal dish is available, you may need permission to install one. What the Engineer Will Do
On the day, the engineer will:
Text or email you when they’re on the way.Arrive within your booked time slot.Install the satellite dish (for Sky Q) or set up your Sky Glass/Stream device.Run cables along walls or skirting boards (not under carpets).Drill holes if needed to route cables.Connect your Sky box to your TV and broadband.Test the system to make sure everything works. They may also need to access your loft—but only if it’s safe (solid floor and fixed ladder).
What If You’re Installing Sky Glass or Sky Stream?
Good news: Sky Glass and Sky Stream don’t need a dish or engineer visit.
Sky Glass: Delivered to your door. Just plug it in, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow on-screen setup.Sky Stream: Comes with a small puck. Plug it into your TV’s HDMI port, connect to Wi-Fi, and you’re ready to go.Sky provides easy-to-follow instructions in the box and online. You can be watching TV the same day it arrives.

What happens on the day of your Sky TV installation
-
On the day of your installation, our engineer will arrive at your home within the time period you requested, although the installation may continue past that. A standard installation often takes no longer than one hour.
When the engineer arrives, they will discuss the best location for your satellite dish and the best route for the cables leading from the dish to you Sky box with you (or the adult you've designated to be available during the appointment).
As the dish is outside your home, some cabling will be attached to the exterior, and holes will be drilled to allow the cables through the wall and into your home. Internal cables are usually tacked to the skirting board.
After installing your equipment, the engineer will give you a quick demonstration, showing you how to use your box and view programmes.
You'll be able to enjoy watching Sky TV on the same day as your set-up.
