Scanning with HP Solution Center Software in Windows

    • Answer
    • Introduction
This document explains how to get started with HP Solution Center software to scan a picture or a document. HP Solution Center is a software program that acts as a central point of access to use and maintain your product. The program controls all the scan features that your product has.
NOTE:HP introduced HP Solution Center to replace HP Director in 2005. HP Director is not compatible with Windows 7. If you were using HP Director with your printer and then upgraded to Windows 7, the information in the Windows 7 section of this document can help you.
Follow these steps for the Windows XP operating system.
HP Solution Center is part of a standard installation of the Full Feature printer software. However, it does not install with a Basic driver installation or a plug-and-play installation. Also, you might have excluded the program if you performed a custom installation.
Check whether HP Solution Center displays in the list of installed programs: Click Start , click All Programs , and then click the HP folder.
Yes! If a Full Feature download is not available for your printer, or if you prefer not to install updated software, you can do basic scanning with Windows software instead. See How to Scan in Windows XP without Using HP Software (c02459304) (in English).
HP offers the most current software available for your printer as a free download. HP Solution Center is part of the Full Feature Software and Drivers download. Follow these steps to check whether this option is available for your printer, download it, and then reinstall the software and drivers.
      1. Disconnect the USB cable from both the product and the computer (if you already connected it).
      2. Turn the product on.
      3. Browse to the Get Software and Drivers page:
Click this link, Get Software and Drivers .
      4. If prompted, type your product number, and then click Next . You might also need to click your model in a list of similar products.
      5. Select your operating system, and then click Next .
      6. Click the Plus sign ( ) next to Driver , and then click the driver that you want to download.
      7. Click More Info , and then read through the minimum system requirements and additional instructions. You can also click View directions ( ) for complete download instructions.
      8. Click Download . This option allows you to install the software at any time after the download completes.
      9. Click Save , and then browse to the location on your computer where you want to save the file.
      10. Click Save . The software downloads to your computer.
Hint: Make a note of the place that you saved the file, in case you want to install it at a later time.
      11. Browse to where you saved the file, and then double-click the file to start the installation.
      12. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
To scan a picture or document, follow these steps:
Step one: Load the item to scan
You can scan from the scanner glass or from the ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) tray, if your product has one.
      1. Make sure that the product is connected to the computer.
      2. Turn the product on.
      3. Load the picture or document:
        • Scanner glass : Place the item with the print side down on the scanner glass, and then position it according to the engraved guides around the glass (usually on the right-front corner or the left-front corner). Close the scanner lid.
        • ADF : Place the item into the document feeder tray. The printed side faces up and the top edge goes into the tray first. Adjust the width guides to fit the item.
CAUTION:Do not load photos in the ADF. Use the scanner glass instead to prevent damage to photos.
      Step two: Scan the item
      1. Open HP Solution Center with one of the following methods:
        • Click Start , click All Programs , click the HP folder, and then click HP Solution Center
        • Double-click the HP Solution Center icon ( ) on your desktop.
      2. If you have more than one HP device installed, click the printer icon on the left for the printer that you are using to scan.
      3. Use one of the following methods to start the scan:
For photos or artwork:Click the on-screen Scan Picture "button" in HP Solution Center.
For a text document with or without graphics:Click the on-screen Scan Document"button" in HP Solution Center.
A "Scanning from..." screen displays to prompt for scan settings.
If this settings screen does not display before the scan starts, a preference was set to bypass the prompt. To adjust settings, follow these steps to turn the prompt back on:
        1. Cancel the scan, return to the home screen of HP Solution Center, and then click the Settings option.
        2. Click Scan Settings , and then click the appropriate option from the popup menu: Scan Picture Settings or Scan Document Settings .
        3. Select the check box, Prompt for settings at the time of scan , and then clickOK .

Important : HP Solution Center versions and options vary, depending on your printer. For specific instructions on all the settings the software offers, click the Helpbutton on the home screen or settings screens in HP Solution Center.
      6. Click Scan .
The preview screen might display, if you selected the option to show a preview. Use the options on the preview screen to make any desired adjustments before you finish the scan.
After the scan completes, it goes to the destination that you specified in the settings.
HP recommends that you first get comfortable with using the "Scan Picture" and "Scan Document" on-screen "buttons" in HP Solution Center as explained in the previous steps. By doing this, you determine the scan settings that you use most often, and then you can more easily set up the scan button on your printer.
Important: Before you use the scan button on your printer, use HP Solution Center to create the settings for that button . For example, you need to decide whether you want a settings prompt screen and a scan preview for each scan. Also, you must create the list of "shortcuts" that you want to display on the front panel of the printer.
To get started, click Settings , click Scan Settings , click Button Settings , and then click the tab forFront Panel Scan Buttons . Read through the options, and then create the settings that you want.
