Scanning with HP Solution Center Software in Windows
- IntroductionThis document explains how to get started with HP Solution Center software to scan a picture or a document. HP Solution Center is a software program that acts as a central point of access to use and maintain your product. The program controls all the scan features that your product has.NOTE:HP introduced HP Solution Center to replace HP Director in 2005. HP Director is not compatible with Windows 7. If you were using HP Director with your printer and then upgraded to Windows 7, the information in the Windows 7 section of this document can help you.Follow these steps for the Windows XP operating system.HP Solution Center is part of a standard installation of the Full Feature printer software. However, it does not install with a Basic driver installation or a plug-and-play installation. Also, you might have excluded the program if you performed a custom installation.Check whether HP Solution Center displays in the list of installed programs: Click Start , click All Programs , and then click the HP folder.If the HP Solution Center icon is blue, you have an older version of HP Solution Center. Click here to go to instructions for your version of Solution Center (c02455373) (in English).If the HP Solution Center icon is black, you are ready to begin. Skip to the "Scan with HP Solution Center" section in this document.If HP Solution Center is not in the list of HP programs, then go to the following "How do I get HP Solution Center?" section in this document.Yes! If a Full Feature download is not available for your printer, or if you prefer not to install updated software, you can do basic scanning with Windows software instead. HP Solution Center is part of the Full Feature Software and Drivers download. Follow these steps to check whether this option is available for your printer, download it, and then reinstall the software and drivers.
- Disconnect the USB cable from both the product and the computer (if you already connected it).
- Turn the product on.
- Browse to the Get Software and Drivers page:Click this link, Get Software and Drivers .
- If prompted, type your product number, and then click Next . You might also need to click your model in a list of similar products.
- Select your operating system, and then click Next .
- Click Download . This option allows you to install the software at any time after the download completes.
- Click Save , and then browse to the location on your computer where you want to save the file.
- Click Save . The software downloads to your computer.Hint: Make a note of the place that you saved the file, in case you want to install it at a later time.
- Browse to where you saved the file, and then double-click the file to start the installation.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
To scan a picture or document, follow these steps:Step one: Load the item to scanYou can scan from the scanner glass or from the ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) tray, if your product has one.- Make sure that the product is connected to the computer.
- Turn the product on.
- Load the picture or document:
- Scanner glass : Place the item with the print side down on the scanner glass, and then position it according to the engraved guides around the glass (usually on the right-front corner or the left-front corner). Close the scanner lid.
- ADF : Place the item into the document feeder tray. The printed side faces up and the top edge goes into the tray first. Adjust the width guides to fit the item.CAUTION:Do not load photos in the ADF. Use the scanner glass instead to prevent damage to photos.
Step two: Scan the item- Open HP Solution Center with one of the following methods:
- Click Start , click All Programs , click the HP folder, and then click HP Solution Center
- If you have more than one HP device installed, click the printer icon on the left for the printer that you are using to scan.
- Use one of the following methods to start the scan:
For photos or artwork: Click the on-screen Scan Picture "button" in HP Solution Center. For a text document with or without graphics: Click the on-screen Scan Document"button" in HP Solution Center. A "Scanning from..." screen displays to prompt for scan settings.If this settings screen does not display before the scan starts, a preference was set to bypass the prompt. To adjust settings, follow these steps to turn the prompt back on:- Cancel the scan, return to the home screen of HP Solution Center, and then click the Settings option.
- Click Scan Settings , and then click the appropriate option from the popup menu: Scan Picture Settings or Scan Document Settings .
- Select the check box, Prompt for settings at the time of scan , and then clickOK .
- Click Home , and then start the scan again.
- On the "Scanning from..." screen, click the appropriate option under "Scan Shortcuts" on the left. Each shortcut has a default group of settings that display when you click it.
- Click Change Settings , and then read through the drop-down menu choices for all of the settings for the shortcut, adjusting any settings as necessary. Also click theAdvanced Picture Settings button and the Save to file Save Options button to view your choices and make any changes.
- Click Scan .The preview screen might display, if you selected the option to show a preview. Use the options on the preview screen to make any desired adjustments before you finish the scan.
After the scan completes, it goes to the destination that you specified in the settings.HP recommends that you first get comfortable with using the "Scan Picture" and "Scan Document" on-screen "buttons" in HP Solution Center as explained in the previous steps. By doing this, you determine the scan settings that you use most often, and then you can more easily set up the scan button on your printer.Important: Before you use the scan button on your printer, use HP Solution Center to create the settings for that button . For example, you need to decide whether you want a settings prompt screen and a scan preview for each scan. Also, you must create the list of "shortcuts" that you want to display on the front panel of the printer.To get started, click Settings , click Scan Settings , click Button Settings , and then click the tab forFront Panel Scan Buttons . This will launch the HP Scan application. - Select New Scan , and then change any desired settings to the scan.
- Click Accept to save the scan to the desired location.
- Follow these steps if you need to save the scan as another file type, such as a .PDF:
- Right-click the recently saved file to open it in another application, such as Microsoft Word.
- Save the new scan as the desired file type.

How to Scan in Windows without Using HP Software
- IntroductionWindows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows7 operating systems provide a basic set of scanning drivers, also referred to as Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) drivers that you can use as an alternative to scan a document when you cannot scan using the HP drivers. You might choose to use these scanning drivers for one of the following reasons:
- Your product released before Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows7, and HP has not released drivers that support scanning for your product.
- You have not installed the available HP software that includes scanning.
- You are troubleshooting a scanning problem and trying to identify the source of the problem.
First, choose your Windows operating system from the following options:Follow these steps for the Windows XP operating system.Scanning with PaintTo scan a document using Paint in Windows XP, follow these steps:NOTE:Before you begin, make sure that the product is connected to your computer.- Click Start , point to All Programs , point to Accessories , and then click Paint .
- Click File , and then click From Scanner or Camera .

If you experience an error during scanning, try these general scan troubleshooting steps (c02114802) (in English). Perform the following steps if you are unable to scan directly from HP Solution Center in Windows XP.- Click Start , and then click My Computer .
- Double-click Local Disc (C:) .
- Double-click Program Files .
- Double-click HP .
- Double-click Digital Imaging .
- Double-click Bin .
- Locate and double-click one of the following files. You will only have one to choose from.
- Hpiscnapp.exe
- Hpqscnvw.exe
This will launch the HP Scan application. - Select New Scan , and then change any desired settings to the scan.
- Click Accept to save the scan to the desired location.
- Follow these steps if you need to save the scan as another file type, such as a .PDF:
- Right-click the recently saved file to open it in another application, such as Microsoft Word.
- Save the new scan as the desired file type.
