Is the Wi-Fi connection automatic?

- Yes, as long as you are within range of the Wi-Fi network and have access to it (a password may be needed), then iPhone will automatically join the network. If Wi-Fi is switched off or a Wi-Fi network is not within range, the iPhone will automatically switch to a 3G, HSDPA, EDGE or GPRS connection.
