getting started with email on my iPhone/iPad

    • Answer
    • Gmail, Yahoo, BT Internet, mobileme, Aol

To set up these accounts you will require the following account information: -

Address - your email address for the account you are adding

Password - the password you use to log into your email account.

      Instructions

      • tap Settings

      • tap on Mail, Contacts and Calendars
      • tap Add Account
      • choose the relevant account type from the list, for BT Internet accounts select Yahoo
      • enter the requested account information and tap Save
      • your phone will now attempt to verify the account information
      • once verified it should briefly show ticks for all input fields
      • then you'll see the account listed at the top of the screen and email should now be ready to use.

N.B. for Gmail and Yahoo accounts before you begin, you will need to login to your email account using a computer and make sure POP/IMAP access is turned on.

      Other email accounts

For most email accounts you will only require the following information: -

Address - your email address for the account you are adding

Password - the password you use to log into your email account.

However if your phone is unable to look up the account details you may also need the following information from your email provider. You can find this information for the main email providers here

      Incoming server

Account Type - POP or IMAP

Host name - the address of the incoming server for your account e.g. mail.yourserver.co.uk

Username - the username for your email account

Password - the password you use to log into your email account.

      Outgoing server

Host name - the address of the outgoing server for your account e.g. smtp.yourserver.co.uk

You will also be asked for a username and password for the outgoing server, this will only need to be entered if the outgoing server has a different username and password from the incoming server.

      Instructions

      • tap Settings

      • tap on Mail, Contacts, Calendars
      • tap Add Account
      • tap on other
      • tap Add Mail Account
      • enter the requested account information and tap Save
      • the iPhone will then attempt to look up the account information, if the account details are not found then you'll be asked to input the additional information above. Select the correct tab for your account tab.
      • the iPhone should then attempt to verify the account information
      • when the account information is verified the iPhone should display ticks beside the information fields

N.B. your iPhone will attempt to set up the email account using SSL security, some email accounts don't use this, so if the iPhone prompts you to set up without SSL tap Yes
