What is the quickest and simplest way of upgrading software on my phone?
-
The simplest and quickest way to update the software on your phone is through your internet browser. You don’t need to install the BlackBerry Desktop Manager software anymore. This new way of upgrading works for all current phones, and most previous phones.
All you need is a PC connected to the internet and a USB cable to connect your BlackBerry to your PC.
Once your phone is connected please go to www.blackberry.co.uk/update and follow the instructions. You will be presented with a recommended software option to upgrade your phone if an upgrade is available. If you wish to downgrade the software on your phone you will need to select “View Other Versions” and then select a software version to downgrade to. For example if downgrading from v6.0 to v5.0 software please select the v5.0 software with the highest version number. The upgrade will take about 45 minutes. During the software upgrade process your phones data will be backed up and restored once the update is complete.

What are the different ways I can upgrade the software on my phone?
-
There are a few different ways of updating the software on your phone. O2 recommends and suggests Web Software Loading (WebSL) is used as it works for all BlackBerry’s and its simple and quick.
WebSoftware Loading
The phones software is updated using the internet browser and connecting your phone to your PC with a USB cable. It doesn’t require you to install anything on your PC. The update can take between up to 45 minutes. You should follow the instructions on via the loading software link. To use Web Software Loading, the phone needs to be on handheld software v4.5 or later.
Desktop Manager Software Loading
Desktop Manager can automatically download the latest software for the phone you are using, perform additional device backup and restores. There is no longer any requirement for most customers to download and install O2 accredited handheld software to your PC and then upgrade using Desktop Manager. However for very old BlackBerry phones or if your are on a Business Tariff, downloading individual O2 accredited software to a PC and then using Desktop Manager to install on your phone may still be required.

How can I identify the version of software I am using on my device?
-
A quick and quirky way to find what version of software is running on a device is to typemyver in the field of an email and then return. The software version will appear on the screen example 9700/5.0.0.593
Alternative ways of identifying the version of handheld software are –
On handheld software v5.0 or earlier Select “Options” and then “About” The software version number is at the beginning of the 3rd line of text after the “v” for example “v5.0.0.832”
On handheld software v6.0 or later Select “Options” and then “Device” and then scroll down to “About Device Versions” The software version number is in the middle of the 3rd line of text after the “v” for example “v6.0.0.285”
