    • Question

Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. Cannot open the Outlook window.

Applies To: Office | Office 2007 | Microsoft Office Outlook | Windows Vista

I cannot open the default profile in outlook 2007 since service pack 2 was installed on my vista ultimate 64-bit edition machine by windows update.  I receive the error "Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook.  Cannot open the Outlook window."  I have created a new profile and it works ok, but would really like to get the settings from the other profile.  Is there anyway to recover this apparently "broken" profile?

    • Question

      Can't install Office 2003 in Windows 7

I'm trying to install Office 2003 back on my PC after installing Windows 7, and it keeps giving me an error message that the installer is 'not a valid Win32 application?'  I've seen posts that others have successfully installed it, so am I missing something that I need to do?  I was curious if Office would only run in XP mode possibly, which I have not set up on my computer, but may need to if this is the case

      Hi Josh D7777,

Thanks for using the Answers Forum.

What version of XP did you upgrade from? 32-bit or 64-bit?
      Is this Windows 7 32-bit or 64-bit?

Are you installing it the default folder or are you choosing a different location?

Windows 7 is compatible with Office 2003.
You might try copying the contents of the CD to the hard drive and installing from there.
You could also try XP compatibility mode.

You can also use the System File Checker to make sure there are no corrupt or missing Windows 7 files causing the issue.
Here's an article on how to use SFC:

      http://support.microsoft.com/kb/936212

It says Vista, but it should work the same for Windows 7.

Please let us know how this works out.

  • Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010 encountered an error during setup.

    • Question

Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010 encountered an error during setup.

I've finally gotten Office 2003 out of the way so that I can install 2010. Unfortunately, every time I try, this error appears.

Helpful as ever, no extra information (not even a mere error code) is provided.

Does anybody have any ideas as to what is going on and how I can remedy this? Please don't make my go back to 2003... it's more than a little outdated for a Windows 7 computer.

Thanks Ezil. I had the same problem.

I had badly installed office 2007. then I removed manually office 2007 by following this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928218/en-us

Then when I was trying to install office 2010, i got the exact same error on this thread subject without giving me details.

By following Ezil's advice, Renaming "%Programdata%\Microsoft Help" folder, it installed successfully.

Finally got it installed. Step-by-step guide for other users who encounter the same issue:

      1) Create a new administrator account.

      2) Log on and launch the installer.

If things don't quite work perfectly now:

      3) If you recieve errors accessing your ProgramData folder, use the TakeOwnership registry hack to take control of the entire ProgramData folder, and if needed, create a "Microsoft Office" folder with "Microsoft Office 2010 Tools" inside it under %programdata%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu.

      4) Your error may return at the end of the installation, but don't worry, it's finished and Office is now installed. Switch user (don't log off!) and go back to your own user. Double-check that everything works. Now, to turn off your computer, press and hold the power button for ~five seconds. This will force the computer to shut down instantly, which will close the installer with the error without giving it the opportunity to roll back its changes.

      Answer

      Hi Sangeetha

This is a very common question, and the answer is usually one of these two scenarios:

      1.       Did you just install Office from a retail box you just purchased?  If so, go to Control Panel, Programs, Programs and Features and see if there is another copy of Office installed besides the suite you just installed.  Some pre-installed Trial Office 2007 suites can conflict with the product key validation process.  If you see a duplicate copy of Office installed, then uninstall it and try to run your new Office program again.  Chances are your product key will work now.

      2.       If you are using the 25-digit product key that you found on a sticker on the bottom of your laptop or on the back of your desktop case, then you are using the wrong key.  This key is the product key for theWindows operating system, and NOT for the Office Suite.  The correct product key for the Office suite will be in one of these places:

      a.       Inside the retail Office 2007 box (if you bought Office from a retail store)

      b.      Inside an e-mail from the online website where you purchased Office

      c.       On the outside of the CD case, on a sticker

Microsoft has a knowledge base article that goes into more detail around the invalid product key scenario.  It is located at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836178  , and would be a good place to go if these instructions above do not resolve your issue.

      Dear folks

I've attempted at least 6 searches across different parts of the microsoft site to find some instructions to fix this error (message received when trying to attach word 2007 vista files to an email).

Started about a day ago and I've already done a system restore which has not fixed it

must be looking at the wrong spots on this website because I would be certain the instructions to fix this would surely already exist.

      Thanking you for your assistance

      Hi LMatth,

Look at the "Known Issues" section of this Microsoft article.

      http://support.microsoft.com/kb/973904

Let me fix it myself To unregister the mswrd632 converter yourself, edit the registry as follows:
      1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
      2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
        HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Text Converters\Import\MSWord6.wpc
      3. On the Edit menu, click Delete.
      4. Click Yes.
      5. Exit Registry Editor.
This change will effectively unregister the converter and disable it for third-party applications and for Microsoft Office. Microsoft Office will use its own text converters to open these kinds of files.

"Microsoft PowerPoint has stopped working" (new install of 2010 on Vista). Crashes every time on start up, even in safe mode.

Applies To: Office | Office 2010 | Microsoft Office PowerPoint | Windows Vista

      Hi -

I just installed Office 2010 Professional, and all of the programs open fine except PowerPoint.  When I open it, it starts to load and then flashes the message "Microsoft PowerPoint has stopped working" and then just stops.  It will not start, open or load.  I have tried to start it in Safe mode, but the same thing happens.  I have also tried to 'repair' the software.  Still the same message.

My operating system is Windows Vista SP 2

      Help?  Thanks in advance!

I had this exact same problem.  It is related to Bootcamp 3.2 and how it treats the keyboard.  For me the solution was covered under a web posting entitled "Bootcamp broke my powerpoint".  I listed the steps that corrected the issue below as a reference:

The latest Bootcamp update disables a keyboard setting in Windows. To fix:

      Open Control Panel
In view mode “View by Category”, find the section “Clock, Language and Region”
Click “Change Keyboards or other input methods”
      Press the button “Change Keyboards”
      Press the button “Add”
Scroll down to “English (United States)” and expand.
      Check box “US”
      Press OK.
Press OK. — You’ll see two keyboards listed “US” and “United States (Apple)”
      Press OK.

    • Question

      Powerpoint 2010 crashes when typing

Applies To: Office | Office 2010 | Microsoft Office PowerPoint | Windows 7

Powerpoint 2010 began crashing whenever I try to add text. I will open a document, make a textbox active, and as soon as I try to enter the first character, the program crashes. It has no problems if I cut and paste text in, and all other functionality (i.e. adding shapes, deleting slides, etc...) appears to work fine. I can even delete existing test with no problems. As soon as I try to add any new character to the document using the keyboard, the program crashes. I restarted my computer and the problem did not go away. I have not installed any new software between the last time it was working and now, but there may have been some system updates.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I recently ran into this problem and doc mck solution for changing the keyboard lay out really helped.  I'm running Windows 7 x64 on a MacBook Pro with Powerpoint 2007.  I had to go into the Control Panel > Region and Language Settings > Keyboards and Languages.  Selected "Change Keyboards" and added "English (United States) - US" to the input languages and now everything works.  I guess Microsoft no longer enjoyed the "English (United States) -  United States (Apple)" input any longer.

Today is the first time I had this problem, but Powerpoint 2007 had worked earlier in January without issue.

Can anyone help ?. I get this message when I try and send mail from Outlook included in Office 2010. I am using Windows 7 on the new laptop  and transferred my files using windows 'easy transfer'.

Nothing sends or receives, yet the system on Vista works perfectly (even though I never liked Vista much) . I have looked for two days at various 'fixes' but they all seem to apply to Outlook 2007. I am def not a computer whizz as some of u are , but would appreciate assistance (if anyone can) to make an old guy happy. Windows 7 seemed superb, until I hit this error code......

You cannot use Windows Easy Transfer with Outlook. The profile it creates is corrupt. So while you should repaire your PST file, you should also create a new Outlook profile and use a supported method to connect it to your PST file: Open the PST file in the news profile and then set it as your default.

      Hi,

      Try the following methods.

      Method 1:

Start->Start Search >  then type the following -> "Outlook.exe /resetnavpane" without the quotes.

(Look for the space between outlook.exe and /)

      Method 2:

Check if Outlook is in a compatibility mode:
      1> Open My Computer>Local Disk C>Program Files>Microsoft Office>Office 12>Outlook.exe.
(If you are using a 64 bit machine, go to C:\Program Files x86\Microsoft Office>Office 12>Outlook.exe

2> Right click on Outlook.exe and click on Properties and then click on Compatibility tab. Check if you have any check mark in any of the compatibility mode options. Make sure you also click on the option "change settings for all users" tab at the bottom of the same screen and look for similar check boxes in the window.

3> If you see any check boxes in the compatibility mode options, uncheck all the boxes and click onApply and OK

4> Try to open outlook again

      Method 3:
Try repairing Office. Check the link below.

    • Question

      Outlook 2010 Autocomplete not working

Applies To: Office | Office 2010 | Microsoft Office Outlook | Windows 7

I had been running the beta version of Outlook 2010 for a couple of months. After a while, my autocomplete of contacts stopped working. I recently upgraded to the RTM version hoping this would fix the issue, but it didn't.

Some of my address still work via autocomplete, so it doesn't appear that the entire cache has failed. I haven't noticed any pattern to what addresses come up and I don't know of any installations that I've performed that could have caused this.

      Any recommended solutions?

The autocomplete data was stored as an .nk2 file in previous versions of Outlook. However When you upgrade to Outlook 2010 you can try to import the .nk2 file to update the autocomplete information.

Outlook 2010 - Any time I try to send an email, the email will not leave the outbox.  It does not matter whether there is an attachment or not.  I have tried repairing, working offline to delete the stuck email and everything else I can think of, however, deleting it and retyping the whole email to prepare for another send only ends up with the same result - it's stuck and won't leave the outbox.  I have even tried sending emails as a test... with only one word in the subject and body... so it's not the size.  Does anyone know of a fix?

Disabling AVG Add-In seems to do the trick, shame as I've used AVG for a long time and am generally happy with it. Hopefully AVG will fix it soon if it is them!

No ODBC Drivers available for Excel or Access! Even after a complete new installation of Windows 7 and Office 2003 professional or Office 2007 professional on another computer. When I want to add a driver in the ODBC Data Source Administrator, the response is: "To install new drivers use the driver's setup program!"

In the ODBC Data Source Administrators Windows only the SQL-Native Client and SQL-Server, from Microsoft shows to be installed!

How to install these ODBC Drivers or how to go about it? Thanks a lot for your responses!

Office setup can be run again from the "Change" item when you highlight the Office listing in Control Panel/Programs and Features. You run the ODBC setup files there by choosing to install that feature.

Are you running Win7 64bit? If so, launch c:\windows\SysWOW64\odbcsys32.exe and see if the drivers are there. I don't know why they are there on my system and not in the ODBC administrator in the Control Panel. Very irritating.

Yeah baby, finally something that works!  Pesky Skype add-in!!

Just for reference:  Windows7, Office 2007, after disabling and enabling the Skype add-in in IE the issue is now repeatable: when IE is running the error appears, when IE is not the copy and past operation happens with no unwanted messages.
