Don’t worry if you don’t have the product CD! You can download the most current software available for your product from the HP Web site at no cost. The following information might help you decide which installation method to use:
      CDDownload
For a new product:CD installation is a quick and easy method. If you do not have a CD, you can download the software you need.
For an older product:CD installation might not work if you are installing the product on a computer running a newer operating system that released AFTER the HP product released.

For example, Windows Vista released in 2007. If HP manufactured your product prior to that year, the CD that came with the product might not work correctly on a computer running Vista.
Downloading the software provides the best results for your older product. Even though it takes more time than using the CD, downloading the latest software can help you avoid installation issues.

Downloading is the recommended method if your computer operating system released after the HP product released.
About the software:The software on the CD is current to the date of the product release. The software you can download from the HP Web site is most current software available for your product. HP often updates software and drivers AFTER the product and CD release to the market.

Click Start , click My Computer , and then double-click the CD drive.
      2. Follow the on-screen instructions to start the installation.
If prompted to choose the type of installation, review the following information:

Recommended , Full , or EasyCustom , Express , or Advanced
For full use of all your product features : This installation provides full product functionality. HP also includes valuable software to help you get the most out of your product.

HP designed this type of installation to work for most users.
A custom type of installation might be available for your product. This installation allows you to install the minimum software required or the preferred software. Use this type of installation only if you have one of the following reasons:

        • The computer is low on hard disk space.
        • You attempted a recommended type of installation and received errors. (If errors occur during the recommended installation, fix them before trying a custom installation.)
The Recommended type of installation allows you to take advantage of all your product features.

      Step one: Download the software
Many products have more than one driver option on the downloads page. Choices might include a Basic type, and Full Feature type. If both options are available, the following information might help you decide which driver to download.
      Basic typeFull Feature type

      (Strongly Recommended)
HP does not recommend installing the basic driver unless you have one of the following reasons:

      • You plan to use the All-in-One for printing only.
      • You plan to scan with Microsoft WIA drivers, Twain drivers, or third party scanning software.

The basic driver is smaller and downloads more quickly. However, it does not provide the software needed by most users to copy and fax from the computer, and to use all the scanning features of the product.
For full use of all your product features: This driver provides complete product functionality for printing, scanning, copying, and faxing.

HP also includes valuable software to help you get the most out of your product. The software varies by product , but here are some examples:

      • HP Solution Center : This important tool allows you to control settings for printing, copying, and scanning. It also helps you with product maintenance, troubleshooting, software updates, and links to buy supplies.
      • Searchable help filestailored to your product
      • Image-editing software

NOTE: During the Full Feature installation process, you can choose a custom installation, where you select the specific software items that you want to install.
Follow these steps to download the software and driver for your product.
      1. Disconnect the USB cable from both the product and the computer (if you already connected it).
      2. Turn the product on.

    • Introduction
This document explains how to install the print drivers and other software for your HP product. Please read this if you plan to use a USB cable to connect your product to a computer that has a Windows 7 operating system.
      Figure 1: USB cable
      USB cable
CAUTION: Do NOT connect the USB cable now. Wait until the on-screen instructions prompt you to connect it. HP recommends using a USB cable that is less than 3 m (10 ft) long.
A print driver is a software program that allows the computer to run the product. HP offers a variety of print drivers and software on the product CD and the HP Web site. The available choices vary by product.
NOTE:If you are trying to resolve a particular issue or error message, reinstalling a driver might not resolve the issue. Unless you know that reinstalling is the correct solution, search for help documents that pertain to your specific issue or error message.
Should I install with the product CD, download the software, or use the Windows 7 driver?
Don’t worry if you don’t have the product CD! You can download the most current software available for your product from the HP Web site at no cost. The following information might help you decide which installation method to use:
      CDDownload
For a new product:CD installation is a quick and easy method. If you do not have a CD, you can download the software you need.
For an older product:CD installation might not work if you are installing the product on a computer running a newer operating system that released AFTER the HP product released.

For example, Windows 7 released in 2009. If HP manufactured your product prior to that year, the CD that came with the product might not work correctly on a computer running Windows 7.

      Click your preferred installation method:
Follow these steps to download the software, and then install it.
      Step one: Download the software
Watch the following video for information about the differences between a full driver and a basic driver.
If you have trouble viewing the video or to view the video in a different size, click here to play the video on YouTube .
Many products have more than one driver option on the downloads page. Choices might include aBasic type, and Full Feature type. If both options are available, the following information might help you decide which driver to download.
      Basic typeFull Feature type
For basic printing: This driver runs the basic print functions of your product only.

If you have an All-in-One, the basic driver does not provide the software needed for most users to copy or fax from the computer, or to use all the scanning features of the All-in-One.

For quick download: The file size is smaller than the Full Feature driver, so it is faster to download and install.
For enhanced printing and full functionality: HP includes valuable software to help you get the most from your product. If you have an All-in-One, this driver provides complete product functionality for printing, scanning, copying, and faxing.

The software varies by product , but here are some examples:

      • Searchable help files tailored to your product
      • Image-editing software
      • HP Solution Center: This important tool helps you establish settings for printing. It also helps you with product maintenance, troubleshooting, software updates, and links to buy supplies.

NOTE: During the Full Feature installation process, you can choose a custom installation, where you select the specific software items that you want to install.
HP recommends the Full Feature type of download, if available, to ensure the best support your product.
Follow these steps to download the product software and save it to your computer.
      1. Disconnect the USB cable from both the product and the computer (if you already connected it).
      2. Turn the product on.
      3. Open a new window to browse to the Get Software and Drivers page:
Right-click this link, Get Software and Drivers , and then click Open in New Window .

For your product, Windows 7 comes with basic driver built into the operating system (in-OS driver).
With this basic driver, the buttons on the product do not function and some of the advanced product features are not available. However, using the workaround procedures in this document, you can still print from a software program. You can also import and view images on a memory card, if your product has a memory card slot.
When you connect the product to the computer, Windows 7 detects the hardware and automatically installs the correct driver. A notification lets you know when installation begins and when it is complete. You do not have to download any software or insert the product CD.

    • Introduction
With the release of OS X 10.7 Lion, HP is providing updated print drivers and software. These updates are available through Apple Software Updates in Mac OS X.
Depending on the product functionality, one or more of the following HP software components might be included in the HP driver update:
      • HP print driver
      • HP fax driver
      • HP Utility
      • HP scan driver
NOTE:Scan support for many HP All-in-Ones is included with the HP software available through Apple Software Updates. To scan, use Preview , Image Capture or the Scanicon from the print driver queue.
After the public release of Lion, HP is releasing updated full HP software packages for many models on the HP Software and Drivers page. These software packages will include the HP installer with network setup and HP Scan 3. The schedule delay allows time for full testing and quality assurance from HP against the final OS X 10.7 release.
Important : Older HP software might not be compatible with OS X 10.7 Lion. After installing OS X 10.7, you might receive an 'Unsupported Operating System ' message if you install previous Mac OS X 10.3, 10.4, 10.5, or 10.6 software, either from an original product CD or from HP Web downloads. This is expected behavior because the software is designed for operating systems previous to OS X 10.7. See the following sections for information on using your product with OS X 10.7.

Step one: Let the setup program complete and reboot all network devices

      1. Make sure that you have let the setup program complete by clicking Continue in the setup screens (if you don't see any HP software setup screens, then it's already done).

      2. Click the Windows icon (Windows_icn), and then type Windows update in the Search programs and files box.

      3. In the Security area, click Check for updates.

      4. On the Windows Update screen, click Check for updates.

      5. Accept all updates, or at least all critical updates.

      6. When prompted, reboot your computer.

      7. Turn the product and the network router off, and then turn them on again.

      8. Verify that your network router is on and functioning.

      9. Make sure you can view an Internet Web page from a Web browser on your computer.

Step two: Plug in the Ethernet cable and print a network test report to verify that the product is on the network

      1. Plug the Ethernet cable into the product and ensure that the other end is plugged into a live network port.

        • If your product has a control panel display, follow these steps:

  • Wireless Printer Installation Troubleshooting

    • Step one: Print a test page

If you have problems setting up your printer, the first thing to do is print a Network Configuration page and Wireless Network Test report (if the printer has a wireless network connection) from the printer control panel. Consult your manual for instructions.

This information will allow you to troubleshoot the installation. Also, have your wireless router's network name (SSID) and, if your wireless network uses either WEP or WPA security, the wireless password.

Step two: Determine if your printer is connected to your wireless router

Refer to the Network Configuration page or Wireless Network Test report and check the following:

      • Does the Wireless Network Test report indicate trouble? Follow the recommendations on the report to resolve them.

      • Do the reports indicate that the printer is connected to your wireless router, and not to a neighbor's? The network name the printer is connected to will be shown on the both the Network Configuration page and Wireless Network Test report.

      • Compare the printer's IP address to the gateway IP address. They should have a similar format (for example, the gateway IP address might be 192.168.0.1 and the printer IP address 192.168.0.5). If the printer has an IP address similar to 169.254.XXX.XXX or 0.0.0.0, it probably is not connected to your wireless network.

      • If you're using a wireless connection, see if the wireless indicator lamp is illuminated. Also, the Wireless Network Test report will indicate if the printer's wireless radio is off. Can you turn on the wireless radio from the control panel of the printer (if the radio is off)? Are there any error messages on the printer or unexpected blinking lights. Consult your manual to determine what to expect.

      • On some printers, the Network Configuration page will list all wireless networks detected in your area. Is your network listed among those found? Does it have good signal strength?

      • Are there several networks on your same channel or using channels close to your channel? You should use a channel at least 5 channels away from the closest used channel. Consider changing your wireless router's channel. We recommend 1 or 11.

        • If your printer is connected to your wireless router, continue to the next step.

        • If your printer is not connected to your wireless router, follow these steps:

          • Look for firmware updates for your specific printer on HP's web site: Get Software and Drivers

          • If your Internet Service Provider (ISP) owns your router, unplug the Internet cable that runs between the router and the wall.

            1. Cycle power to your printer: turn the printer off using the on/off button. Remove the power cord from the back of the printer, wait 30 seconds and then reconnect the cord. Consult your manual for specifics.

            2. Restart the wireless router by removing the power cord to the router, waiting 30 seconds, then reconnecting the power cord.

            3. Restart your computer.

            4. Connect the printer to the router.

            5. Give your printer a static IP address. For instructions on assigning a static IP address, see the DISCOVER MORE section on this page, and go to HP's Wireless Printing Center.

Step three: If your printer is connected to your wireless router, but you cannot print (and/or scan)

      1. Download and run HP's Network Diagnostic Utility. See the TROUBLSHOOTING TOOLSsection on this page for a link to the utility.

      2. Make sure your operating system is current. (In Windows, use Windows Update. For Mac OS, use Software Update.)

      3. Make sure that your computer is free from viruses, malware, etc.

      4. Make sure your computer is not connected through a VPN (Virtual Private Network). You cannot access devices on your wireless network while connected to a VPN.

      5. Disable your operating system's firewall and your security system's firewall and re-test.
If this fixes the problem, open ports in the firewall. See the firewall manufacturer for more information.

      6. Download and install the latest software for your specific printer and operating system from Get Software and Drivers
It is important that you download the software specific to your HP printer model. The software shipped on your CD may have been updated since it was created. If you are reinstalling or uninstalling, use the HP Uninstall software to remove previous software installations or partial installations first.

      7. Look for software updates for your specific software while you are the Software and Driver web site.

If the printer installed successfully, but the printer isn't working as expected, we have a solution for you. HP has designed automated utilities (tools) to diagnose and resolve common printing, network, and scanning issues. Select from the following options to download and run the utility for your printer problem.
