How do I set my computer to obtain an IP address from my router/Hub automatically?

    • Answer
    • BT routers/Hubs are configured to automatically provide an IP address to the computers connected to it. For this to work, your computers have to accept this address instead of using a static IP address.

      Instructions for Windows operating systems

      1. Click on ‘Start’ menu, then ‘Settings’ or ‘Control Panel’ and then ‘Network Connections’
      2. Under ‘Local Area Network’, right-click the network adapter you use to connect to your router, then click Properties
      3. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) connection at the bottom of the list, then click Properties
      4. Select Obtain an IP address automatically
      5. Select Obtain DNS server address automatically
      6. Click on OK twice to confirm the settings.

Instructions for MAC OSX operating systems:

      1. From the Apple menu, open System Preferences and click on Network. The Network window opens. Note: If the New Port Detected window appears, click OK.
      2. Click on the drop down menu Show: and select the network adapter used to connect to your router
      3. Select the TCP/IP Tab.
      4. Click on the drop down menu Configure: and select the option Using DHCP
      5. Click Apply now and close the window.
