How to set up security on the Netgear DGN1000

    • Answer
    • exclamation mark icon By default, security is turned off on the Netgear router. As such, it's really important that security is enabled when you set up the router for the first time. To do this follow the steps below:

The Pre-configured Netgear DGN 1000 routers are secured by default with WiFi security type as Mixed WPA/WPA2 . The security key and SSID are located at the bottom of the router.

      1. Select Wireless Settings from the Setup menu:

Netgear SMARTWIZARD admin pages - Wireless Settings selected

      2. In the 'Wireless Network' field:

        - change the SSID name to something other than NETGEAR, and unique i.e. Orange58647 or your preferred option of 32 alphanumeric characters
        - set the region to Europe
        - set the channel to Auto - this will automatically scan between channels 1-11 to determine the least used channel in the your local environment
        - set 'Mode' to Up to 150Mbps

        WIreless Settings menu
      3. In the Wireless Access Point field:
        - ensure that 'Enable Wireless Access Point' is checked (unless you don't want a wireless connection)
        - ensure that 'Allow Broadcast of Name (SSID)' is checked
        - ensure that 'Wireless Isolation' is not checked

      4. No changes are required to 'Wireless Station Access List' unless you've previously enabled the option, in which case it will need to be turned off.
      5. In the 'Security Options' field, select the option 'Mixed WPA-PSK+WPA2-PSK:

      6. In the 'Network Key' field, enter a security key for the connection - this should be over 8 characters and can be made up of upper and lower case letters from a-z and numbers 0-9.

      7. Once complete, select Apply - the page will refresh and new settings will be visible.
      8. You can now connect your computer or other devices to the wireless router, assured that your connection is secure.
