    Connecting your Nintendo Wii wirelessly

    • Answer
    • You can connect your Wii to the internet using a wireless connection. To connect to the internet with wires, you will need a Wii LAN adapter. You may need to purchase this separately from the manufacturer or an electrical goods retailer. You will also need an Ethernet cable such as the yellow one supplied with Sky Broadband set-up kits.

Before you try to connect your Nintendo Wii to the internet, switch on your games console and check that your Sky wireless router is connected to the internet.

If you haven't set-up your Sky Broadband router, first you will need to unpack it and start it up. You can find help and advice on doing this in our Setting up your Sky Broadband router guide

If you've not connected your router yet, don't forget to check your Sky Broadband activation date - you will not be able to set up your broadband connection if your Sky Broadband has not been activated. You should have received this in a letter from Sky or you can check online to see if your service has been activated

Once you have set up your router, watch the instructional video or follow the step-by-step guide below. Please note that the router in the video may be different from your router at home, but the principle of connecting to the internet is exactly the same.

Step 1 - Open the Wii menu

Open the main Wii menu and select the Wii button. You should see this in the bottom left-hand corner of your screen.

Step 2 - Select Wii settings

You should be taken to the Settings menu. When this appears, select the Wii settings option.

      Step 3 - Select 'Internet'

You’ll now go to the Wii System Settings 1 page. You actually need to be in the Wii System Settings 2 page so click on the arrow icon and you’ll be taken to the correct page.

Step 4 - Select Connection Settings

In the new page select the Internet option by pressing A on your Wii remote.

Step 5 - Select the Wireless Connection

From the list that appears, select Connection Settings then connection 1. From there, select wireless connection.

Step 6 - Select 'Search for an Access Point'

Choose the option Search for an Access Point.

Step 7 - Choose the access point you want to connect to

A message will appear on your screen telling you to choose the access point you want to connect to. Select OK.

Step 8 - Find your Wireless Network Name

For the next steps, you’ll need to know your Wireless Network Name. This is just the name of the wireless network you connect to and it’s printed on the Keep Me Handy Card that came with your Sky Broadband wireless router.

If you can’t find it your code can also be found on the bottom of your router. Unless you’ve changed it, your wireless network name will probably be something like “ SKY” followed by five numbers. For example SKY 12345.

Step 9 - Find the right network

Look for your wire network from the list of available networks and select it.

Step 10 - Select the right security method

You’ll now be asked to select the security code that your router uses. Unless you'v e changed the encryption settings, this will be WPA-PSK (TKIP).

Step 11 - Enter your Network Key

You’ ll now be asked for your password, also known as yourNetwork Key. The password can be found below your wireless network name on your Keep Me Handy Card or under your Sky Broadband.

Make sure you type it in exactly as it’s printed or it won’t work. There are no numbers, so if you see any circles they’ll be letter Os, not zeros.

      Step 12 - Save Settings

A message will appear asking if you want to save these settings. Select OK so you don’t have to repeat these steps every time you want to connect your Wii to the internet.

Step 13 - Test your internet connection

A different message will pop up telling you that your network settings have been saved. Select “OK” and your Wii will automatically test your connection to make sure that no mistakes have been made.

Step 14 - You are now connected to the internet

Once the test has finished you’ll see a screen telling you that the connection was successful. It will then ask if you’d like to perform a Wii system update. Select No to return to the  main menu. That's it, your now ready to start online gaming.
