Connecting your PlayStation 3 to your Sky wireless router
- Answer
-
You can connect your PlayStation 3 to the internet using a wired connection (with an Ethernet cable, like the yellow one supplied with your Sky Broadband set-up kit ) or through a wireless connection.
Before you start, switch on your Playstation 3 and check that your Sky wireless router is connected to the internet.
If you haven't set-up your Sky Broadband router, first you will need to unpack it and start it up. You can find help and advice on doing this in our Setting up your Sky Broadband router guide.
If you've not connected your router yet, don't forget to check your Sky Broadband activation date - you will not be able to set up your broadband connection if your Sky Broadband has not been activated. You should have received this in a letter from Sky or you can check online to see if your service has been activated.
Once you have set up your router, watch our instructional videos or follow the simple step-by-step guide on how to connect your Playstation 3 to the internet. Please note that the router in the video may be different from your router at home, but the principle of connecting to the internet is exactly the same.
Connecting your PS3 to the internet with a wired connection
To connect to the internet using wires, you’ll need an Ethernet cable like the yellow one that came with your Sky Broadband set-up kit.
Plug the Ethernet cable into one of the sockets at the back of your Sky Broadband wireless router and put the other end into your PS3.
In the home menu, select the Settings option followed by the Network Settings option.
Select the Internet Connections Settings by pressing the ‘ X’ button on your PS3 controller.
A message will pop up on your screen saying ‘Adjust settings for connection to the internet. If making a wired connection you must have an Ethernet cable connected.’ Select Yes.
At this point you can either select the easy option or the custom option. Make sure you select the easy option.
You’ll now be given the choice to connect using a wireless connection or a wired connection. Choose the wired connection option.
A screen will pop up called proxy server. Select ‘Do not use’ then press X and X again to save the settings.
You’ll then be asked to test the connection. Press X to start the test and everything should pass.Step 1- Connecting your PS3 to the internet using a wireless connectionOpen your Playstation’s Home Menu, then select Settings and then Network settings.Step 2 - Choose internet connection settingsWhen it appears on screen, choose the option called Internet Connection Settings.Step 3 - Adjust connection settingsA pop-up should appear saying Adjust settings for connection to the internet. Choose ok to carry onStep 4 - Select wireless optionNow you’ll need to select Wireless from the options on the screen.Step 5 - Scan for available networksSelect the Scan option. Your Playstation 3 will now show all of the available wireless networks in a list.Step 6 - Find your SSID CodeFor the next steps, you’ll need to know your SSID code. This is just the name of the wireless network you connect to and it’s printed on the Wireless Network Settings Card that came with your Sky Broadband set-up pack. If you can’t find it, don’t worry, your code can also be found on the bottom of your Sky Broadband wireless router.Unless you’ve changed it, the SSID code will probably be something like “SKY” followed by five numbers. For example SKY 12345.
Step 7 - Add your security codeLook for your SSID code from the list of available networks and select it. Then the security code, which will be WPA-PSK (TKIP), unless you’ve changed the encryption settings will be selected automatically. Press the arrow on the d pad or move the analog stick to the right to then move on to entering your Network Key.Step 8 - The network keyThe Network Key is your password and is printed next to your SSID code on the base of your router. Make sure you type it in exactly as it’s printed or it won’t work. And remember, The Network Key is case sensitive. There are no numbers, so if you see any circles, they are Os, not zeros.Step 9 - Save your changesWhen you’re done, save your changes by pressing the Start button or select done on the screen. You’ll then be asked to click x to save the settings.Step 10 - Test ConnectionBefore you start playing online you can check to make sure you’ve set up your connection properly. Just select the Test Connection option. If there are any problems your PS3 will helpfully give you instructions on how to change your settings.Step 11 - Your connected to the internetOnce that’s done, you should see a message telling you that the test has completed successfully. That's it, you're ready to start online gaming.
