  • How do I join TalkTalk?

    • You can sign up online, over the phone on 0800 049 7802 or at any Carphone Warehouse store. Once you've signed up, you can sit back and relax as we'll do all the hard work for you.

We would recommend that you contact your old provider to ensure that they have stopped billing you.

Once you've signed up, you'll receive a welcome pack and email confirmation of your order, along with other documentation as your order progresses. Keep these documents safe for future reference, as you will need them later on. In these documents you'll find your go-live date(s) for your landline and broadband services (these may be the same date depending on the services available). You can start using your TalkTalk services on your go-live date.

We recommend that you contact your previous provider to notify them that you wish to cancel, and that you follow up with them to make sure they have stopped billing you.

  • Will my line rental switch to TalkTalk?

    • All TalkTalk packages sold today include line rental. TalkTalk line rental is included when you take advantage of the Essentials or Plus packages, which include broadband. You can find out more about our call plans with line rental at TalkTalk landline.

Getting your line rental from TalkTalk is easier because you'll get only one bill every month. Once your line is active with TalkTalk, we will bill you for both your line rental and calls. BT will then send you a credit for any unused line rental you've already paid for. We will take responsibility for your line - although we still use experienced BT engineers for any faults.

  • Can I keep my phone number when I join TalkTalk?

    • Yes. If you already have a BT home telephone number then you will keep the same number when you move over to TalkTalk.

The process is easy. Once you've signed up, we'll take care of all the details and make sure your telephone number moves over to TalkTalk.

Shortly after joining TalkTalk you will receive a welcome pack and an email confirmation of your order along with other documentation as your order progresses. In these documents, you will find your go-live date(s) for your landline and broadband services (these may be the same date depending on the services available). You can start using your TalkTalk services on your go-live date.

If you don't already have a phone line installed and don't have an existing number, you can still sign-up with TalkTalk and we'll provide you with a new line and new phone number.

Note: Customers moving home with TalkTalk are not able to keep their phone number.

  • Switching to TalkTalk with a MAC

    • Once you have signed up we will contact your current provider and arrange to transfer your services to TalkTalk. In a small number of cases we may need you to contact your current provider to get a MAC (Migration Authorisation Code). We will tell you during the sign-up process if you need to do this. Don't worry; it's standard procedure to ask for it, and your existing providers will know what they have to do.

Once your service with TalkTalk is up and running we would recommend that you contact your old provider to ensure that they have stopped billing you.

  • How can I order a new telephone line?

  • I think I need a new line, how can I check for sure?

    • To find out if your property has previously had a BT line, look for a white phone socket with a BT logo, usually found on a wall.

If you can't find one, and are not aware of the previous owners having a BT line, you are likely to need a new line. Please be aware that similar phone sockets may have been provided by a supplier other than BT. Sometimes even where a socket exists it may not necessarily be evidence that the property was previously served by BT.

We can check this for you:

      1. Choose a Calling Plan and click 'Get it now'.
      2. Select 'No, I don't have a working phone number and I'd like a new BT line'.
      3. Enter your postcode
Once we've confirmed your address we'll be able to tell you whether you need an engineer visit and if a connection charge applies.

  • How long will it take to install a new line?

    • If a completely new line needs to be installed then it will usually take up to 15 working days, subject to an engineer's visit and availability. However, if we find you already have a working line in your property, this time will be reduced. We will agree a convenient appointment on a suitable date with you.

  • How can I track my order?

  • What happens after I order a package?

    • When you order a Broadband and Calls (or a TV, Broadband and Calls) package, we'll first agree a date with you for your telephone line to be installed or upgraded. This date is known as your 'activation date' and is usually around five working days from when you order. During these five days we'll test your line to check it will work with broadband. We don't need to visit to run this test.

If everything is OK we'll send you a 'Welcome pack' containing everything you need for your BT Broadband service:

      • Software and installation instructions
      • BT Home Hub
      • Two microfilters
      • Power supply and cables

We'll keep you informed about the progress of your order by email. Your equipment package should arrive between 7am and 6pm on your activation date. You can then set up your broadband equipment, following the instructions in the set-up guide. The telephone line itself will be activated any time up to midnight on the same day.

If you've ordered a triple package you'll also receive:

      • BT Vision+ box with cables
      • Powerline Adapters
      • Vision remote control
      • Power supply

You'll only be charged for your package from the date all your package services are available. However, your telephone line rental charges will start from the date your telephone line is activated.

  • What information do I need when I contact BT to arrange a reconnection?

  • What will reconnecting to BT cost me?

    • If your home has had a telephone service from BT in the recent past, and the wiring and socket is undamaged and the line still has a dial tone, it's likely you won't need to pay any connection or reconnection charges. You'll just have to pay for your chosen calling plan, the cost of any extra calls not included in the plan and for any additional services you require from BT.

Where there's no suitable BT line available in your property, no dial tone on the line, or if you have been disconnected for non-payment in the past, then you'll need to pay a connection charge. If you only have a calling plan with BT this is normally £130.

However, if you've signed up for a calls and broadband package, or if you have a calls, broadband and TV package, we don't charge for connection charge.

Please note that some properties (for example, new property developments) may have a white BT socket installed which has not yet been connected. In this case the current standard connection charge will also apply if you only have a calling plan with BT. If you've signed up for a calls and broadband package, or if you have a calls, broadband and TV package, there is no connection charge.

The fee covers engineering work in your exchange or your property in order to connect the line.

If you order online, then we'll let you know whether you need to pay a connection charge during your order.

Any connection charges will be added to your first BT bill. If you call us to order (on 0800 800 150 )we can also discuss the option of spreading the cost of the connection charge over 12 months.

All reconnections are subject to a credit check, as a result of which we might ask some people to pay a deposit. A minimum term of 12 months will apply to the line rental.

  • Can I keep my current phone number if I switch all my services to BT from another provider?

    • If you currently have your telephone services provided by another company (e.g. a cable operator), then we should be able to transfer your number to your new BT account.

All you need to do is tell us:
      • What company you are using
      • Your existing account number

You won't be charged for this transfer. We'll liaise with your current cable provider to ensure that you do not have a break in service. And, if for any reason we cannot transfer your number to BT, we'll give you a new number for free.
