  • How do I get a vodafone.co.uk (My account) username and password so I can use Wi-Fi on my iPhone?

  • BT Openzone – Connection Manager is trying to connect me to a BT Openzone hotspot and it keeps failing. Why is this happening?

    • BT Openzone have 2 Wi-Fi networks, their public network and their FON network. The public network includes sites such as hotels, coffee shops and motorway services and O2 Mobile Broadband customers can use these hotspots when they are out and about. The FON network consists of BT Broadband customers who allow other BT Broadband customers to share some of their Wi-Fi. O2 Mobile Broadband does not cover the use of these hotspots.

BT use the same name for both of their networks and Connection Manager will attempt to connect you to a FON hotspot if it finds one available. We’re working with BT to find a solution to this problem but in the mean time we recommend that you only try to connect to BT Openzone hotspots that are in the Connection Manager Wi-Fi Hotspot Directory.

  • How will I know if my iPhone is using Wi-Fi?

  • How do I set up my iPhone to use The Cloud or BT Openzone's network of hotspots?

    • There is one time authentication process to follow when you first visit a Cloud or BT Openzone hotspot. Simply follow the steps below to complete this authentication.

      1. Ensure you have a Wi-Fi connection. Check the upper left corner of the screen for the Wi-Fi symbol.

      2. From the iPhone main menu page, select the 'Safari' icon which initiates a search for available Wi-Fi hotspots in your location.

      3. If you are in coverage of a Cloud or BT Openzone hotspot, you will be offered 'Wi-Fi Zone - The Cloud' or Wi-Fi Zone - BT Openzone. Select the Wi-Fi provider you wish to connect through.

      4. From Safari bookmarks, tap on a bookmark and depending on your selection this will take you to The Cloud or BT Openzone iPhone home page.

      5. Enter your Mobile Phone Number and select 'go'

      6. When Wi-Fi session is established, you will see either 'welcome to The Cloud' or 'Welome to BT Openzone' and the session counter displays the session time. You can now begin your Wi-Fi browsing session!

Once you have completed these steps, your future use of Wi-Fi via The Cloud or BT Openzone is seamless.

All you will need to do is ensure you are in a Cloud or BT Openzone hotspot and then start browsing, using You Tube or downloading a track from iTunes. It couldn't be easier.

  • I've been using Wi-Fi, but have just been asked to register my mobile number, why?

  • Is the Wi-Fi connection automatic?

    • Yes, as long as you are within range of the Wi-Fi network and have access to it (a password may be needed), then iPhone will automatically join the network. If Wi-Fi is switched off or a Wi-Fi network is not within range, the iPhone will automatically switch to a 3G, HSDPA, EDGE or GPRS connection.

  • All my settings are correct but my iPhone still won't work with my home Wi-Fi connection.

    • For some home Wi-Fi connections it may be necessary to add the DNS addresses of your Internet Service Provider to the iPhone.

Firstly you need to find out what the DNS addresses of your ISP/broadband provider are. You may need to access the settings in your Wi-Fi router or contact your ISP to find these.

Once you have the DNS settings of your ISP, on the iPhone go to Settings > General > Network > Wi-Fi.

Select the blue arrow next to the network you are connected to. Select DNS. Change the IP Address to the DNS addresses of your Internet Service Provider.

Most BlackBerry phones have Wi-Fi built-in and using it will allow you to use data hungry services (like video and music streaming) quickly and without eating into your O2 data allowance.

Wi-Fi is a flexible alternative to connect to the internet and perfect for those marathon internet sessions when you need to use lots of data.
So taking the time to set up your Wi-Fi options on your iPhone in advance will mean you always have the chance to obtain the best connection wherever you find yourself and for whatever you want to do.

  • is there a limit to the amount of data I can use in a hotspot?

    • Your iPhone tariff includes unlimited use of BT Openzone hotspots. In order to ensure a fair allocation of network resources to all customers a fair use policy of 750MB per month applies. Customers consistently using more than this amount may be asked to moderate their use, and in extreme circumstances may be disconnected from the offer.

  • how to setup WiFi on your BlackBerry Torch 9800

    • To setup WiFi you will need to be in range of the WiFi network you wish to connect to. You may also need any network password and to have set the network to allow new connections. The instructions below are for connecting to a typical WPA secured home network, for other security methods the steps may differ slightly

      1. open the applications tray

      2. tap the Setup icon

      3. tap the WiFi icon

      4. you maybe prompted to switch on WiFi, tap Turn on WiFi if needed

      5. the phone will now scan for WiFi networks in range

      6. tap Next if you have a Welcome to WiFi setup message on screen

      7. tap the network you wish to join

      8. enter the pre-shared key (security key) for the network you are joining, if this is your home WiFi network you need to use the security key for your router. For a typical home network this is a 26 digit password made up of numbers and letters.

      9. at the Save this Wi-Fi Network as a Profile anyway? field, ensure Yes is selected

      10. click Next

  • Why, when I enter the same URL, do I get different web sites on my phone and PC?

    • In order to ensure that you receive the best possible mobile experience, Vodafone has worked with many top brands to develop sites that are specifically designed to work well on your phone.

Content has been arranged to suit small screens and help you find what you need quickly and non-essential or data-heavy content has been removed or reduced. Also file formats that simply don't work on many phones, such as Flash animation, have been removed. The resulting mobile-friendly sites provide you with a much improved, faster and more reliable service. Where these services are available, the web site owners often either redirect mobile visitors automatically or ask Vodafone to redirect visitors on their behalf.

  • How much data will I use when I view video?

    • If you're downloading a video that's meant for a mobile screen, 1MB per minute is a good rule of thumb. Using this rule, a 4 minute video clip would use around 4MB of your daily or monthly allowance. If the video was meant for a TV or PC screen, or it's over 5 minutes long, we wouldn't recommend downloading it to your phone, as it may struggle to play it back and you may not have enough storage space on your phone. A better solution for your mobile is to stream the video.
