Why did I get an estimated bill when I gave you my EnergySmart™ meter reading?

There are usually a few days between the date we ask for the meter reading and the date we calculate your bill. We always take your meter readings into account but have to estimate your energy usage for those extra few days.

Is it possible to accidentally receive a signal from another EnergySmart™ transmitter/sensor?
-
For black and white monitor customers:
This is very unlikely but if you think your display is picking up another transmitter, repeat the pairing exercise to connect the display to your own transmitter.
For colour monitor customers:
Colour monitors only pair to one sensor so this won't be a problem.

Why does the EnergySmart™display unit sometimes show a different reading to my bill?
-
The electricity monitor is a good indication of your approximate electricity consumption, but it does not measure your consumption with 100% accuracy. We still use your electricity meter readings to calculate your bills.
We send email and/or SMS text reminders when your meter reading is due. To update your email address, mobile number or other details, log in to your online account.

Why is the transmitter battery symbol flashing on my EnergySmart™ monitor?
-
For black and white monitor customers:
We expect the batteries to last for at least two years. Toward the end of their life the Battery symbol will flash to let you know to replace them. Do not use rechargeable batteries.
For colour monitor customers:
The Lithium battery supplied in your sensor should last.

-
Why is the Communications symbol flashing on my EnergySmart™ monitor?
-
The Communications symbol will flash if:
The display unit and transmitter are unable to communicate, read more.
The display unit is receiving data from two transmitters (only with the black & white monitor model). Try pairing the display unit with the transmitter again to eliminate the other transmitter.
- View More: British Gas Why is the Communications symbol flashing on my EnergySmart™ monitor?

-
Why won't my EnergySmart™ display unit and transmitter communicate?
-
The electricity monitor is designed to operate in a home environment over a range of 20/30 meters depending on your monitor type (colour monitors have a 20m range and black & white monitors have a 30m range), with up to two walls in between the transmitter and display. If the units are set further apart, then you may need to bring them closer together to communicate.
Other reasons for the units not communicating may be:
Radio interference: This is unlikely in a home environment, but try moving both the transmitter and display unit away from any possible source of interference including large metal objects e.g. a fridge.
Dead batteries in the sensor/transmitter: Check the LED light is illuminated with the batteries inserted? If not then try using new batteries.

What makes the energyshare tariff better for the environment?
-
As standard we match every unit of electricity you use at home by putting a unit of renewable electricity into the national grid. This is the base level of a green tariff but to make a difference you have to create an additional benefit.
We do that with two elements, one for you and one for the community. Firstly, for everyone that signs up we give them a choice of energy efficiency product to help them use less energy at home, and reduce their carbon emissions (and save money of course). Secondly, we also donate £10 into the energyshare fund on your behalf, this money is used to fund community energy projects that are working to directly reduce how much energy they use, and to generate renewable energy locally.

How is the energyshare tariff electricity from 100% British renewable sources?
-
The energyshare tariff matches every unit of electricity a tariff member uses by supplying the national grid with the same amount of electricity from 100% British renewable sources. This is audited by the Green Energy Supply Certification Scheme and we match it from renewable sources such as the Lynn and Inner Dowsing wind farm off the coast of Lincolnshire.
We do that by retiring Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin and Levy Exemption Certificates, meaning that this electricity can't be double counted. The British Gas fuel mix refers to the total mix of energy sources for the whole of British Gas' electricity supply, including other tariffs. Renewable sources make up 6.8% of this amount.

What free energy efficiency products can I get when I become an energyshare member?
-
When you become a member of energyshare, you'll also be able to choose from the following free products. They're all designed to help you to save energy, and reduce your carbon emissions at home (and to save money of course).
You can choose from:
- an electricity monitor - this provides you with a real time estimate of your electricity consumption. It's simple to set up and has been shown that it can help you to save around 10% of your annual electricity bill
- a single socket standby saver - this plug socket automatically turns the TV off when the remote control is used to switch it to standby, saving any electricity that would be wasted by leaving your TV in standby mode
- a water widget and Eco Kettle - this bundle can change the way you use water in the home. The Eco Kettle can help you save 31% on your energy use every time you boil water and the water widget connects to your shower to reduce the water it uses by up to 70%
- radiator panels - these simple panels slide behind your radiators to reflect heat back into the room rather than out of the windows and through the walls, helping you to save energy and money

What is the energyshare tariff?
-
energyshare is our exciting new tariff, which matches the electricity you use with electricity from 100% British renewable sources - at the same price as our Standard tariff. For every unit of electricity you use, we will supply the same amount of electricity back into the grid from renewable sources such as offshore wind farms, like Lynn and Inner Dowsing off the coast of Lincolnshire.
As an energyshare tariff member you'll also get a free energy saving gadget and we'll make a contribution to the energyshare fund for every year you're with us. The energyshare tariff is independently certified as meeting Ofgem's Green Supply Guidelines so when you sign up you can be confident that you'll be making a real, measurable environmental difference without paying more.
There's more to energyshare than just a tariff. British Gas and River Cottage are energyshare's founding partners, it gives everyone the opportunity to get involved in sourcing, using and even generating their renewable energy. Energyshare is giving individuals and communities more control over where their energy comes from, bringing people together in person and online to help community renewable energy projects that are already happening and to inspire and support even more.
By being a member of the energyshare tariff you are supporting this community through the energyshare fund and will get the chance to vote on it's spent. You can find out more at www.energyshare.com
